MP Lloyd Longfield shares his intention not to seek re-election

Guelph, Ontario, June 28^th, 2023

On Wednesday, Lloyd Longfield, Member of Parliament for Guelph, shared his intention that he will not stand for re-election for the 45^th Canadian Federal Election. It is his intent to remain as Guelph’s Member of Parliament until the next federal election is called.

Longfield stated, “It has been the honour of my life to have served our community prior to and during my time as Guelph’s Member of Parliament. By the time of the next scheduled federal election, I will have been proud to serve as Guelph’s Member of Parliament for over 10 years.”

“I look forward to continuing to serve Guelph as the Member of Parliament for the remainder of this term while working to ensure that Guelph is effectively represented in parliament in the future. I continue to be thankful for the privilege to represent Guelph as the Member of Parliament and am even more grateful to my family for their continued support.”

Whether it be working on progressive legislation or making life more affordable for Canadians by sustainably building more homes, delivering affordable childcare for parents, cutting child poverty, or providing dental care to millions of uninsured Canadians, I continue to fully support Prime Minister Trudeau and our government’s work to move Canada forward.”

Highlights of MP Longfield’s work in Guelph:

• Earlier this year, MP Longfield and Prime Minister Justin Trudeau were in Guelph together to jointly announce the Government’s $4 Billion Housing Accelerator Fund which aims to help cities, towns and Indigenous communities unlock new housing supply by speeding up development and approvals while also ensuring that homes are built sustainably.
• This month, Guelph’s first electric buses entered regular transit service—representing a significant part of our city’s plan to reduce emissions, which has been made possible by over $40 Million in federal support.
• During his tenure, the federal government has invested over $140 Million in local businesses involved in transitioning to zero emission vehicles and improving Canada's supply chain for clean technology. 
• He has also championed the disbursement of over $150 Million in research funding at the University of Guelph, enabling facility upgrades to establish Guelph as Canada's leading Food University while it advances global efforts to Improve Life for plants, animals, people and our planet through the One Health Institute.
• Securing funding for the construction of an energy-neutral water treatment facility in Guelph, among many other investments in community facilities.
• Helping create and facilitate the work of the Our Food Future Smart Cities project, which has now evolved into the Circular Opportunity Innovation Launchpad.
• Championing supportive housing projects such as Silver Maples Seniors Community, Grace Gardens, Kindle Communities and Wyndham House.
• Working to encourage and secure funding for enhancements to Guelph’s trail system and cycling network.
• Helping to facilitate the delivery of addictions and mental health support through local service providers.
• Worked to expand supports for Guelph charities and not-for-profits.
• Helping to create enhanced small business and entrepreneurial funding for business through investments for innovation and technologies.
• Supporting hundreds of local youth each year through the Canada Summer Jobs programming.
• Keeping seniors healthy and active through the New Horizons for Seniors funding to the community.
• Supporting newcomers and refugees from Ukraine, Syria, Afghanistan and others.
• Securing federal investments for Guelph to enhance infrastructure and local tourism.
• Supporting individuals and businesses throughout the pandemic and recovery.
