Standing Committee on Science and Research Elects New Chair
Ottawa, ON April 25, 2023 –The Standing Committee on Science and Research, 44th Parliamentary Session, today elected Member of Parliament Lloyd Longfield, as their new Chair of the Committee effective 25 April 2023. MP Longfield succeeds the Honourable Kirsty Duncan who recently stepped down as Chair after serving as Chair since December 2021.
“I am eager to take on this role during such an exciting time in research and innovative advancements in Canada— the needs of the scientific community, regulators, and business are changing rapidly. Science and evidence-based data is crucial to ensure the success, challenges and opportunities ahead of us are met in Canada today” said Longfield.
Lloyd Longfield was elected in October 2015 as the Liberal candidate for Guelph, ON and has continued to represent the community as Member of Parliament for Guelph since. Lloyd has since served as a member of the Standing Committee for Industry, Science and Technology, as a member of the Standing Committee for Agriculture and Agri-Food, as Vice-Chair of the Standing Committee on Public Accounts and is currently a member of the Standing Committee on the Environment and Sustainable Development.
In addition to his committee roles, Lloyd has served as Chair of the Parliamentary Health Research Caucus, he has chaired the Innovation Caucus, Co-Chaired the Automotive Caucus and acted as Secretary of the Ontario Caucus. He has also been an active member in the Social Innovation Caucus, the Mental Health Caucus as well as several Intergovernmental Parliamentary groups with countries such as India, Italy, and organizations like NATO.
In his new role MP Longfield will continue making an impact in Guelph through his work supporting social, environmental and industry policy development. His new role as Chair for the Standing Committee on Science will continue to drive his work based on data and facts.
