Zero Emission Vehicle Rebate - What you need to know.
April 23, 2019
In August, 2018, I took on the role of Co-Chair of the Government Automotive Caucus in Ottawa after playing an active role with the caucus since 2015. The automotive manufacturing industry is key driver of economic growth and development in Guelph and across Canada.
The provincial government in Ontario previously put in place the Electric and Hydrogen Vehicle Incentive Program, which offered a rebate for Ontarians that purchased electric vehicles. Unfortunately, this program was eliminated by the Ford Government. David Adams, president of the Global Automakers of Canada Industry Association has stated “the reality is that without some kind of incentive in place to bridge the price differential between a regular combustion engine vehicle and the more expensive electric or hydrogen vehicles, consumers just don’t purchase them in the same numbers.”
Since taking on the position as Auto Caucus Chair, I have met with representatives from the Automotive and Manufacturing industries and had many discussions about the prospects for electric and hydrogen vehicles. They told me how sales in electric vehicles had flat lined after the Province cut the rebate program. When the provincial program was in place, EV sales reached 4% of the market. When the incentives were removed, volumes dropped to less than 1% in a very short time.
Budget 2019 delivers!
Starting May 1st, we're making it easier for consumers and business owners to purchase an electric vehicle as well as business owners who will now be able to write off the capital costs for eligible zero emission vehicles. We are also investing in charging station infrastructure to make it even easier to transition to an electric vehicle.
As a caucus, we advocated for these kinds of measures because they are the right thing to do for the environment and good for the economy. Many constituents told me that we must find ways to reduce emissions that result from our transportation use.
